Something big is coming. I can feel it, like that buzz in the air before a storm breaks. On August 11, Ford is gearing up for what CEO Jim Farley calls a “Model T moment”. This isn’t just another EV launch, it’s Ford rewriting the playbook with a brand new low-cost EV that will shake the global market. And here’s the part that really got my attention: India is at the centre of it.

Now, when I say “low-cost”, I don’t mean basic. We’re talking about an electric vehicle built on a brand new platform, born out of a secret skunkworks project that’s been running for three years. Ford’s goal? Deliver something affordable, possibly under $30,000 without cutting corners. The magic ingredient? Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries which will start rolling out from their Michigan factory by 2026.

But what really got me excited was Ford’s plan to bring India back into the picture. Remember when they shut down production here in 2021? Well, they’re back and this time with a purpose. The Chennai plant is being retooled as a global EV hub. I’m talking thousands of new jobs, exports to Europe and US and maybe, just maybe, a new Ford low-cost EV made just for Indian roads.

There’s already talk of a compact urban electric SUV for India, possibly priced between ₹22 to ₹26 lakh. It’s exciting to think that Ford’s future is being built in Chennai and rolling off the lines ready to hit Indian highways across the world.

For me, it feels like we’re on the cusp of something big. August 11 isn’t just a date, it’s the start of a whole new EV era. And this time, India’s not just watching from the sidelines. We’re in the thick of it.
