Mahindra has officially unveiled its much-awaited Thar 5-Door. The extended version of their popular off-roader will make its debut during India’s Independence Day festivities on August 15, 2025 – in keeping with Mahindra’s tradition of unveiling significant models during these patriotic festivities.
More Doors, More Practicality
The Thar 5-Door was created to address one of the key limitations of its three-door predecessor, limited cabin space and accessibility. Equipped with an extended wheelbase, proper rear doors, and roomier interior space, it will combine legendary off-road capabilities with everyday practicality for families and urban users.
What Spy Shots Have Revealed
Test vehicles spotted across various Indian terrains have provided us with glimpses of what to expect. The 5-Door Thar features a noticeably longer body, an updated front grille design and potentially larger alloy wheels; its signature tailgate-mounted spare wheel remains, though with some possible design changes to match its longer proportions.
Enhanced Interior Expected
Inside, the 5-Door variant will likely receive significant upgrades. According to reports, these may include an upgraded infotainment system similar to that found on the Scorpio-N, digital instrument cluster and rear AC vents; and likely full bench seat setup making this car truly family-friendly. Additional insulation materials should also improve cabin experience further.
Familiar Engine Options
Although unofficial confirmation, industry sources indicate the 5-Door Thar will continue with its current powertrain options, including the 2.0-liter turbo petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines paired with manual or automatic transmissions, as well as possible suspension adjustments designed to handle extended wheelbase while maintaining off-road performance.
Expanding Reach Beyond Enthusiasts
The 5-Door Thar is designed to attract buyers who desire both weekend adventure capability and weekday practicality, making it a more compelling alternative to conventional compact and mid-size SUVs without true off-road credentials.
Competitve Pricing Anticipated
Current 3-door Thar prices range between Rs 11-17 lakh ex-showroom; its 5-Door variant will likely command an increase of between 2-12% over its 3-door competitors on the market, providing value proposition for similar sized yet less capable cars in its segment.

Challenging Competition
Mahindra appears poised to cement its place as a lifestyle SUV player with this launch of their more practical iteration of their iconic Thar model. Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door, Force Gurkha and some mid-size SUVs may face competition from this more practical iteration of Thar.
Mahindra’s August 15 launch will provide us with an indication of whether they have successfully balanced the rugged DNA of the original Thar with additional comfort and convenience features that family buyers require.
