The buzz is in the air and I’m not just talking about the Sydney skyline. There’s a different kind of excitement building if you’re like me and grew up watching the Supra carve its legend into the asphalt of Gran Turismo, Fast & Furious and Japanese tuner lore. Now the same nameplate is back and this time it’s for real as the Toyota GR Supra Supercar joins the Supercars grid.
September 1st at Freedom_nu in Sydney won’t just be another launch, it’s going to be a statement. Toyota is all set to pull the covers off its V8-powered GR Supra race car, built to challenge the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship. I can already hear the engine notes echoing through the paddocks.
This isn’t just a reworked road car with decals. It’s a ground up race car. Walkinshaw Andretti United will spearhead the effort with two GR Supras, likely to be driven by Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood. Brad Jones Racing are backing it up with four more entries. That’s six Supras on the grid and I’m counting the days until I see them lined up, revving and ready.
What gets me is how far Toyota have come. From clay models at last year’s Bathurst 1000 to a full reveal this September, every part of this feels intentional, sharp and full of that GAZOO Racing spirit. And let’s be real, a GR Supra vs a Supercar Mustang? That’s the stuff dreams are made of.
